All we need is to take one step at a time...

Updated: Apr 21, 2020

He takes the ball past two defenders! He's dribbling dribbling dribbling! Look at the little man go! Oh my lord, he has taken it away from the final defender! Here it is, he shoots and gooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaallll!

Well, that's one way of getting yourself known to the world....though in this case, Messi (the man, the myth, the legend) also had a goal in mind, this one was more tangible and could be seen than the goals we are about to talk about :P

We all aspire to be better, every day, we think of things we want to achieve, it might be big, things like wanting to become a big business executive or one of the richest people in the world or become an actor, become a rockstar, etc....It could be things that aren't career-related and might be related to our health, like losing weight, gaining weight, giving a healthier life, being mentally healthy and so on. But what I think it boils down to is that we want to improve, we want to move and keep changing ourselves even though we hate change.

It is funny to think about how easy it is to say these things, to put it out into the world and be like yeah, of course, I am going to do that, I am going to achieve what I set out to achieve...But it never is that easy, is it?

I mean, I know that I have been a person who has procrastinated on working on themselves for a very long time. I say this because, at one point, I used to think I never had any goals...I mean yeah I made jokes about 'look, these guys are relationship goals, or this is vacation goals' (I know, cringe XD).

But truth be told, at the time I just felt hollow. It took me some time to realize that it wasn't that I didn't have goals, just the fact that I lacked self-confidence and the motivation to act on it. Something I was blinded to during that period. The thing that changed me was my inner drive, it took time and I did not discover that inner drive for years, but when I did, I did not want to look back.

This is something I have seen in many people though, recently I was speaking to a friend of mine and we just ended up talking about what we wanted to do what we saw ourselves working on in the future, while I had a few things I wanted to work on, she seemed confused. Mostly talking about how she doesn't have anything specific in her mind, rather that she did not want to just keep working in the same place or the same type of job all her life.

She never considered herself as a person to have a particular set destination, a set goal but then that got me thinking...does a goal have to be very specific, for her, in a way the goal was to be able to do different things. She was happy to excel in the work she did and then eventually move on. In a way, her goal you can say was and is to be a free spirit. Though many wouldn't see it that way, it was something that just popped in my head.

I feel like sometimes, these ideas, ideals, and thoughts are always right in front of our eyes, we are just too blinded by our own hubris to realize what's in front of us. But that isn't where it stops for us. I know that chasing after your goals can be scary, it is an unknown world without any set rules, we have no time limits, no instructions and no one to oversee our progression, it's just us on a dark path staring down this idea right in front of us.

This beast in front of us can be daunting and often make us shy away from working towards it, but if we want to reach that idea we have in our head...we need to not care about the beast in front of us and stare it in the eye.

The smallest of steps can make the biggest of differences, this is what I have come to realize, whether your goal is to become good at playing guitar, to become more sociable or to speak in public, the idea of doing these things right away doesn't seem easy, but if we make the effort every day and just take a small step towards this goal, we will eventually make it there without even realizing it.

Yes, it will take time but that is fine, do it at your own pace, there is no hurry! Nobody is out here forcing you to achieve everything right here and now because that simply isn't possible. But what is possible is for you to take that small step, make the effort and work towards your goal. If you don't have the time, then give it 10 minutes of your day, wake up early, sleep late, do what you have to...but this will only be possible if you love what you do and if you are willing to just take that small step, make that small sacrifice towards your satisfaction.

Who knows, maybe once you reach closer to your goal, it might just seem like a small harmless puppy that you want to cuddle, after all, it's all about perspective right ;)

Zee and I actually go a lot more in-depth about this topic on our podcast. We thought we should talk about this because we are discovering ourselves every day. We have learned more about ourselves and what we want out of life in the last few months than we did in the last two years and honestly, it felt like a good idea to broach this topic.

This is 1000minus7 signing off, hopefully, I'll see you guys on the pod! And I'll leave you here with a question, what is it that you want to work towards, and if you know what it is, then have you started to take the steps towards that?
