Aside from the fact that when I first heard of the word and pronounced it 'maymay' for all through 9th grade (oh god why) while everyone else laughed behind my back, there is just so much context with memes.
On the outset though, here's a crazy reductionist view of what memes are- an internet inside joke. There you go, I said it :D
As a new set of teenagers is delivered to the world, they come along with a set of snooping parents who try to helicopter their every move. They, therefore, develop the need for a 'secret language' to get the message across, and before you know it they become a part of everyday internet culture, and even as a 30 year old you find yourself searching for 'progression memes' on Instagram every day. Memes are just that, funny everyday things you do on the internet (apart from watching kyaut dogger/catter/baby videos)
We've all had those conversations with our pals were we spoke only in memes and those are wholesome af. That just goes on to indicate how even as a set of grown-up teens, we enjoy talking more in pictures than in words (let's not even get into why people justttt don't want to talk on a phone call anymore!). Memes are funny at their core but often say so much with so less. If you're a memer (yes that's an official word), pat yourself on the back sheeple because you're nothing short of an aficionado with a fine taste, the world wouldn't have it's daily set of humor if not for you!
1. A meme is usually a generic grab of a mainstream moment from pop culture that is brought into this world by the fine folks over at 4chan/Tumblr
2. It then gets critiqued over and trolled on by those fine woke folk on Reddit
3. The meme is then ushered into the world of social media where its popularity becomes its own demise and back to 4chan/Tumblr we go!
Fin.
